STAGE DOOR CONSERVATORY was founded more than a decade ago and offers four popularsummer programs including KIDS ON STAGE, ON BROADWAY, TEENS ON STAGE and BACKSTAGE, a counselor-in-training and apprentice program for high school students. In addition to instruction in acting, singing and dancing, every child becomes part of a supportive community, not only rehearsing and performing in a play, but becoming integrally involved in all aspects of our production — from costuming to set design! ON BROADWAY and TEENS ON STAGE present fully staged Broadway plays before a live audience for four days each summer – in the past at the Julia Morgan Center in Berkeley, Performing Arts Center at El Cerrito High School, and Florence Schwimley Little Theater. These professional theaters offer wonderful performance venues. The past seven years our productions of “Hairspray,” “Les Miserables(School Edition),” “Chicago,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Footloose,” “Grease,” “The Wiz,” “Anything Goes,” “Urinetown,” “Oliver,” “Gypsy,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Annie” and “Grease” have been sold to audiences of as many as 450 persons per performance.

Through KIDS ON STAGE, we produce five shorter plays each summer, drawing audiences of an average of 75 persons per performance for casts of approximately 15 young actors. Our BACKSTAGE participants are integrally involved in all our productions, assisting with sound and lighting design, stage management, costuming, set design, choreography and direction.

During the weeks preceding each of our six annual productions, our cast and crew undergoes an intensive rehearsal process. Each child is guided through the process of developing his or her character/s and craft as a performer. In addition to the group ensemble-oriented training activities that are featured as a regular component of our programs, each child is also offered personalized coaching from our instructors and apprentices to nurture their talents and confidence as a developing performer.

Although many of our participants are committed actors, we welcome children with no prior experience, curious to explore or develop their interests in the theater arts, and create a warm, welcoming and supportive environment for learning. All our programs include a strong conservatory focus and emphasize the integral value and importance of each child’s contribution to our productions.
